8.27.17 The Holy Spirit “The Person of The Holy Spirit” 1 Cor 2:10

I. His Attributes as a Person

– We begin our study by looking at the attributes ascribed to the Holy Spirit

– 1 Cor 2:10-11 – He is intelligent – Searches all things and has knowledge

– 1 Corinthians 2:3 – Able to teach – He teaches us the things of God

– 1 Corinthians 12:11 – He has a will – The gifts He gives you are by His will

– Romans 8:27 – He has a mind – He has His own thoughts

– Ephesians 4:30 – He has feelings – He can be grieved

– All these attributes are the attributes of a person – We must realize that when we engage with the Holy Spirit that we are engaging the third person of the Godhood

  – Listen, Pay attention, Don’t take it lightly!

II. Treated as a Person

– Next in Scripture we discover the Holy Spirit is treated as a person

– Acts 5:3 – He can be lied to – We saw this with Ananias and Sapphira

– Acts 7:51 – Can be resisted – This happens by our disobedience

– Acts 10:19-21 – Should be obeyed – He will direct us to do things that are part of His will for us and we should obey Him

– Ephesians 4:30 – He responds to our disobedience with grief

– Hebrews 10:29 – He can be insulted – If He is leading you into a relationship with the Lord and you dismiss Him it insults Him

– How would you have reacted to the above situations? These are the same way we are treated – The Holy Spirit is a person!

III. His Actions as a Person

– Most of the Holy Spirit’s actions as a person involve His ministry to us which will only be mentioned here. We will be exploring those in depth at a later date

– John 16:8 – Convicts of sin

– John 16:13 – He guides us into truth

– Acts 8:39 – He performs miracles

– Romans 8:26 – He prays

– The Holy Spirit was sent to lead and minister to us in the same way that Jesus did with the disciples – His ministry to us reveals His personhood

– Since the Holy Spirit is a person, then:

  • * We can relate to Him as a person – We can have a real relationship with Him. Be honest and communicate your heart. Pay attention when He responds
  • * We must reject the idea that He is just some kind of influential spirit force to make us “better” people – In the same way the disciples interacted with Jesus we can interact with Him
  • * We should give the proper weight to what He is saying when He is speaking to us

– How do you view what Jesus tells you? – He is God communicating with us and involving Himself in our lives – What an opportunity for us to engage with Him

– View Him on equal footing with God, because He is God and don’t miss your opportunity to have a real, living, vital, life giving relationship with Him!
