3.19.17 “A Deacon’s Service”  1 Timothy 3:8-15; Philippians 1:1-11

I. Deacon Instructions  1 Timothy 3:8-13

– Let’s begin with the guidelines for deacons and their wives. Deacons must be:

  •    * Men of dignity
  •    * Not double tongued
  •    * Not addicted to much wine
  •    * Not fond of sordid gain
  •    * Holding the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience
  •    * Beyond reproach
  •    * Husband of one wife
  •    * Good managers of their children and households

– Their wives must:

  •    * Be dignified
  •    * Not be malicious gossips
  •    * Be temperate
  •    * Be faithful in all things

– These men and women have been tested – They were not tested for perfection – Presence of these elements & teachability

– Those deacons who serve well obtain for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith – Your service, if well done, will affect you

II. Deacon Understanding  1 Timothy 3:14-15

– Paul writes these things so you will know how to behave. Then he points out a couple things to underscore the seriousness of this point

  •    * This is the household of God – These are His people – Love them
  •    * This is the church of the living God – God is involved – Listen to Him
  •    * This is the pillar and support of the truth – Uncompromising – Lasting

– This puts our behavior in context about why it matters – God’s business

– We must do Gods work Gods way – Don’t rely on your own understanding

III. Deacon Encouragement Philippians 1:1-11

– Here one of the people Paul is writing to is the deacons serving at Philippi

  •    * He is grateful for their participation in the gospel
  •    * He’s confident God is going to complete the good work He started in them
  •    * They were partners in Paul’s ministry and imprisonment

– His prayer for them was that their love would abound in real knowledge and all discernment – These go together, when you know the truth you are able to discern the situation allowing them to embrace only excellent things

– Realize you’ve been filled with the fruit of righteousness – Let it out, we need you

CONCLUSION:

– When serving as a deacon, you must never forget:

  • * The behavioral choices you make matter – You may discover that: God will give you some new convictions; Or you start to think about others before you act
  • * We are doing God’s work – We have a tendency to only see the people we are ministering to and forget they belong to Him – Our job is to help make that relationship healthy
  • * He will fulfill what He started in you – As we serve Him, He grows us. It can be painful at times, but you are not alone we are in this together with Him and He finishes what He starts – Deacon ministry is a calling from God

– Remember when you see the hand of God it makes everything else worth it
