10.29.17 “The Work of The Holy Spirit in the Walk of the Christian – The Filling”

The Holy Spirit

This morning we will see how the filling of the Holy Spirit affects the Christian’s walk as we explore the instruction to be filled, how to know you are filled, and how the filling changes what we do . . .

I. The Instruction to be Filled

– Read Ephesians 5:15-21 – We are told here to “be filled with the Holy Spirit” – This means the filling of the Holy Spirit has something to do with us – So then, what is the filling of the Holy Spirit? – It means to be led or controlled by Him

– Being filled with the Holy Spirit is how we walk wisely, avoid evil, and understand what the will of the Lord is – You can’t do it without being filled

– Do not get drunk with wine for that is dissipation – Explain dissipation (ie. a storm) – What’s dissipating? – The expression of the Holy Spirit within us and our ability to walk wisely, avoid evil, & understand the will of the Lord

– Benefits:

  •    * Our relationships improve – How we speak to one another changes
  •    * Our attitude improves – Make melody in your heart to the Lord
  •    * Gratitude – Always giving thanks
  •    * Submission to one another

II. How to Know You are Filled with the Holy Spirit

– If we are instructed to be filled with the Spirit, it is imperative that we are aware of when we are filled, walking in Spirit, and when we are not

– The key to understanding when you are being filled is found in Galatians 5:22-23

– The fruit of the Spirit accompanies the filling of the Spirit – When filled with the Spirit you will demonstrate:

  •    * Love
  •    * Joy
  •    * Peace
  •    * Patience
  •    * Kindness
  •    * Goodness
  •    * Faithfulness
  •    * Gentleness
  •    * Self-Control

– These will be apparent when interacting with someone filled with the Spirit

– If these characteristics are not apparent they are not filled with the Spirit

III. How the Filling Changes What We Do

– When we are filled with the Holy Spirit our behavior changes naturally aligning with God’s will for our lives – Here are a few biblical examples’s of how the Holy Spirit filling changed people’s behavior:

  •    * Read Luke 1:67 – Zacharias prophesied
  •    * Read Acts 2:4 – They spoke with other tongues as the Holy Spirit gave them the ability
  •    * Read Acts 4:31 – They spoke the Word of God with boldness
  •    * Read Acts 13:52 – They were filled with joy

– Walking in the filling of the Holy Spirit allows us to fulfill God’s plans and we get to experience Him working thru us – He will lead you if you let Him!

CONCLUSION:

– How does understanding the filling of the Holy Spirit change our walk?:

  • * It moves us from the idea of what can I do for God to the understanding that God is already at work in and thru me to accomplish His plans – Are you willing to join Him?
  • * It shows us how our relationship with the Lord develops into the ministry He planned for us – Our ministry is to give away the relationship we have with the Lord so others can enjoy Him also – Would anyone want your relationship with the Lord
  • * When we walk in the Spirit we demonstrate the characteristics of God – This becomes a good evaluation tool for both our own walk and for the walk of others as we minister to them
